MyFootballClub Agrees Takeover

By: Matt | November 13th, 2007

eIt was announced today that MyFootballClub.co.uk has purchased a conference national team. The group, which has brought together 50,000 people to purchase an English league side, has agreed in principle with Ebbsfleet United (formerly Gravesend & Northfleet FC) to purchase a 51% stake in the team.

Currently lying 9th in the Conference (Blue Square Premier or whatever), it is hard to predict exactly how this will turnout. See the MYFC website for more details, but basically the goal is the true democratic running of a football side. The 50,000 ‘owners’ will decide by vote on all aspects of the side including team selection, transfers, sponsorship, etc.

The opinions have been thick and fast, and widely varied, including Birmingham chairman David Sullivan generally slating the whole idea. The comments from the Ebbsfleet camp have been good, as expected, and I personally feel the idea can have some success.

With the extra cash injection in the January window, and a decent position currently to challenge for the playoffs, a debut in the Football League may not be that far off, and who knows, maybe the Championship isn’t out of range as well.

What do you think?

I’m actually glad that they are buying a conference team and not one in the league. Thousands of “fans” owing a team like Leeds is just impractical, and warrants a valid criticism: that opposing fans could buy a stake in the club just to keep it down. There’s less at stake with a conference team - good for them.

Great news- but I seriously doubt that opposing fans would ever realistically purchase a stake in a rival team just to keep it down. Perhaps I’m an optimist, but I doubt a group of rational humans would ever be that callous and bitter (unless their Leeds fans- good point).
