Crewe’s Vaunted Youth Academy Faces Axe
By: Nick | February 8th, 2007
It’ll be a dark day if it happens - yet even the mere possibility of Crewe Alexandra’s famous player development program being under serious threat - has to be a huge concern for the future of the British game.
Inevitably the chief concern is money - or the lack of it filtering down from the top levels. Plus there’s a clear dearth of respect for the whole system from certain Premiership managers. A laughable attitude to be honest - how do they think Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale et al were nurtured?
Perhaps the guiltiest might be Arsene Wenger and his foreign legion. Can Arsenal’s lack of interest in young British players truly be good long term?
