Football League Club of the Week - Accrington Stanley

By: Nick | March 5th, 2007

stanleybadge.jpg It hasn’t been pretty at times this season - but Stanley are fighting hard to keep the League status they missed for 44 years until last April.

But the club weren’t relegated in the 1962 season - they were actually kicked out of the Football League for financial reasons (evidently they couldn’t afford the gas bill).

Incredibly by 1963 the Lancashire town of Accrington’s club completely disappeared - only to come back in 1968 to start all over again. It was a long road back through the amateur levels of British football and culminated with their dream return for this season.

Maybe they can stick around now and remember to pay the gas bill.
