MK Dons Continue to Get No Respect

By: Nick | June 7th, 2007

mkdons.jpgThe Milton Keynes Dons (aka Franchise FC) are a unique club. For those unfamiliar with the story, the MK Dons actually used to be Wimbledon Football Club. The very same Wimbledon that beat Liverpool in the 1988 FA Cup Final in one of the biggest upsets in the history of the competition.

Sixteen rather more unsuccessful years later, after being purchased by music promoter Pete Winkelman — the unusual/tragic decision was made to move the club to Milton Keynes. 62 miles from their South London home. As you’d expect this upset quite a few people who’d followed Wimbledon their entire lives. The mood was generally happier in Milton Keynes.

Three years after the move, there is still lingering bitterness towards the Dons. The brilliant publication When Saturday Comes still refuses to mention the club by name.

So news that Watford have scheduled a pre-season fixture against Milton Keynes has predictably and understandably gone down like a lead balloon with Hornets fans.
