A Quite Juicy Football League Rivalry — Wolves versus West Brom
By: Nick | March 10th, 2007
England’s West Midlands has no shortage of football clubs - and therefore no shortage of local derbies. One of the most intense for the clubs’ fans is when Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion come together - hence the customary noon Sunday kick-off tomorrow (when the local pubs are safely closed).
They’ve met each other over 150 times and despite the insistence of some within the ranks of the West Brom faithful that Aston Villa are a bigger rival for them (Villa’s home is only four miles away, whereas Wolves’ Molineux lies closer to twelve) — there are others who happily see Wolves as the antagonists in the ‘Black Country‘ derby.
The BBC’s Adrian Chiles (and famous West Brom fan) puts a fans attitude towards the rivalry like this:
“I remember presenting the morning business show a few years ago and at the end I said, ‘Just one football score for you, West Brom 1 Wolves 0.’ It was juvenile, but I thought, why not? Six or seven years later Wolves beat us and I got a random e-mail from an irate viewer saying, “I bet you won’t be telling people about the fucking score this time, will you Chiles?”
Fans’ minds will be squarely focused on this particular meeting perhaps a little more that normal. This match has huge League implications. West Brom lie fourth in the Championship table with Wolves lying seventh - a single point behind. As usual with local derbies, home advantage likely counts for nothing - in January West Brom showed up at Wolves’ front door and promptly went about a three nil thrashing.
