David Nugent Helps Put Preston North End on the Map — Is the Clubs First England Scorer Since 1958
By: Nick | March 29th, 2007
The last Preston player to score for England was Sir Tom Finney — and you can tell it was a while ago because his Wikipedia entry describes one of his field positions as outside right.
It was 49 years ago to be exact and quite possibly the last year the term ‘outside right’ was used in football.
But among the ruins of another English debacle, there is a nice little nugget, after Preston striker David Nugent came on as a sub against the mighty Andorra - and promptly tapped in the easiest goal he will probably ever score.
Needless to say the folks in Preston are pretty delighted with Nugent’s trivia quiz worthy achievement - Sir Tom Finney among them. It should also prove a huge boost to all players in the Football League who might be slogging away in the lower levels and dreaming of the Premiership.
The Premiership waits for Nugent - but the lower level should enjoy this.

He’s still a dick for scoring that one though.

It’s surprising that a team with as much history as PNE has been that long off the scoring list for England, but I guess its been pretty dry times lately for Preston. I was glad to see Nugent in the match - he seems to play with a little more passion than some of these pampered Premiership stars. For most of them, I have to agree with the fans on Wednesday - “You don’t deserve to wear the shirt”

Uninteresting side note: On our way (we wuz on vacation) from Glasgow to Manchester a couple years ago, we visited both Old Trafford and Preston’s stadium (”Deepdale” I think it was called? Maybe? Possibly?) and I just felt better at the Preston one, despite being practically a lifelong Manchester United fan.
As for the game, David scoring after so few minutes in the game was nearly as impressive as his dad killing that bear with a bow and arrow on tv. Wait, Ted IS his dad, right?

Hey Clint - did you visit the football museum in Preston? I’m heading home in May and am debating trying to visit.
