Going Up to the Promised Land?

By: Nick | April 24th, 2007

pl.jpg A thoroughly enjoyable Championship season has come down to the final two games — with three clubs locked together to earn the precious two automatic qualifying spots.

While the right to lose to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge is sought after by every club in the Football League, there’s a greater incentive than ever this year as the Premiership’s massive overseas tv contract kicks in next season, and clubs in the league next year will get a much bigger sum of money than in the past — even the ones that are relegated. So the stakes for Sunderland, Birmingham City and Derby County are absolutely huge. For even if they go straight back down next year — they’ll receive a handsome ‘balloon’ payment, which will give them an overwhelming advantage to keep the exact same squad in the Championship and try to come straight back up.
