Meet Preston North End and English Hero — David Kevin Nugent
By: Nick | March 29th, 2007
There’s nothing like a group of teammates to aid the process of you maintaining a reasonably sized ego, when you’ve just marked your England debut with a goal. And you play outside the Premiership.
It seems that ex-player and current TV pundit Jamie Redknapp unfortunately (and comically) referred to Nugent as ‘Kevin’ while butchering the art of punditry the other night.
Unsurprisingly the Preston squad found the slip up rather amusing and have since taken to calling Nugent ‘Kevin’. Surely such foolery will help Nugent stay grounded as he stands to be crucial to the Lilywhites promotion run in.

English hero? Bit of a stretch. He really shouldn’t have poached that goal through.
BTW, you linked the Sun. Ugh.

Oh, and I’m sure he’s a hero to plenty in the Preston universe. Grrr.

True, it was harsh on Defoe for Nugent to tap that one in when it was obviously going to make it over the line. But you could argue that he was being a good striker and making sure the ball was firmly in the back of the net. Would any other England player have done differently? It may even make Nugent a better striker for England now that he’s broken his ‘duck’ – less pressure to get his first.
And sure, The Sun is far from the heights of English journalism like the Guardian or the Independent or whatever Brian reads, but it was directly relevant to what Nick was talking about so I don’t see a problem with it.
